Backups

How to make, download and restore a full backup of your site, and what isn't included in the free version.

PressConduit can make a full backup of your site and restore it, without you touching a server.

What a backup can include

Any mix of these, zipped into one file:

  • The database
  • Uploads
  • Plugins
  • Themes
  • WordPress core

How it works

A backup runs as a background job, so it keeps going even on a big site and doesn't time out. You can ask your assistant to start one, check on its progress, list your backups, and get a download link. The download link is short-lived on purpose.

Restoring

Restoring puts a backup's database and/or files back on the site. It's a destructive action, so it always asks you to confirm first.

It can also move a site to a new domain in the same pass. After the database is restored, PressConduit rewrites the old address throughout the whole database, in a way that keeps widgets and page builder content intact.

Before you restore, you can look inside a backup zip to see whether it has a database and which folders it holds. That doesn't change anything.

Backups made somewhere else

There's a Backups tab in the PressConduit screen where you can drop in a .zip made by another tool or another site. It shows up in your list marked as uploaded, and you can inspect and restore it like any other.

Not in the free WordPress.org version

Backup and restore aren't part of the free version of the plugin from WordPress.org. A full copy of a site's database and code is more sensitive than the tools that version includes.
